Home-Start is a voluntary organisation that supports parents of young children experiencing challenging difficulties.
The charity began in 1973 and now there are 288 schemes supporting local communities, plus, schemes in 22 countries around the world from Norway to Sri Lanka.
Although Home-Start UK provides structure and research, each scheme is self-funded and responds to the need in their local community.
Home-Start Erewash has been supporting local families for 29 years. We work with families with children under 5. At least 80% of families come from the most deprived areas and face multiple disadvantage including isolation, poor mental health, poor employment opportunites and health inequalities.
OUR VISION: Home-Start Erewash wants to see a society in which every parent has the support they need to give their children the best possible start in life
Our volunteers visit families with one or more children under 5, at home, for up to 3 hours each week. They build a relationship of trust with parents and offer them emotional support; parenting advice; practical help, such as with budgeting, and making the home safe. They help parents to access appointments and activities in the local community, encouraging them to build their own support networks. They also provide support and advocacy to parents whose children are subject to Child Protection (20% of children we work with).
Each year we recruit and train local people with parenting experience, to become home visiting volunteers. We have 23 volunteers and 6 new volunteers about to start with us. Volunteers are provided with on-going supervision, training and support.
